OS X Snow Leopard is coming

with 2 comments

I only wish anyone who reads this knew my friend Moe. He’s got a sound effect he makes that represents both the Miami Dolphins’ revolutionary Wildcat offensive formation AND Apple’s newest operating system: OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Imagine a man making a sound effect meant to mock people who make sounds like a cat. That’s the best way I can describe it.

Anyway, despite my friend’s feline screeching, I’m really psyched to try out the new operating system. Apparently, this is an update where most of the changes are under the hood to take advantage of 64-bit technology, memory architecture and confusing stuff like that. Things like startups, shutdowns and the like are supposed to go a lot quicker. The finder is supposed to be more responsive and snappier. Quicktime’s interface and controls have been given an overhaul. I’m curious to see what it’s all about. I’ve been an early adopter for every one of Apple’s OS X upgrades from 10.2 on and I have to say that every one has been an impressive step forward. Some more so than others, but all have been positive developments.

Well I got a new MacBook Pro last week (more on that in a later post) and as a result I can get a Snow Leopard upgrade for just under $10. Even better, they’re shipping them out so I’m supposed to receive it the same day it’s available in stores: Friday. Pretty cool move on their part.

But I screwed up. The delivery address I put down is my office only we are shutting down early this Friday at 1 pm. Fed Ex rarely delivers non-express deliveries before 2 pm to our office and I found out it’s too late to change my shipping address. If I don’t get it I’ll be bummed because I’m motivated to put in the hours and manpower to get it done this weekend. I’ll hang around for a bit on Friday after most people leave and see if I get lucky.

Anyway, I’ll do a writeup about how that all goes. Hopefully it will all be smooth.

Almost 400 reasons to stay home

leave a comment »

Got a hurtful speeding ticket just the other morning. I was going 43 in a 25, albeit in my defense, it’s a speed trap 25. What I mean is, it’s the last few hundred yards within a school zone. You are in fact, well beyond the school at that point, but during certain times you’re still subject to Johnny Law. They know you’ve passed the high school and are now on a big, wide and fairly straight road. You’re going to step on it. They’re more than happy to be ready and waiting.

The fine? Almost $400. That’s not a typo. I was always under the impression that it’s once you go 20 mph over the speed limit that you got hit with a really hefty fine. But it does have the desired affect. I’m driving as slow as a grandmother these days.

“I guess that’s why you start your own company. So you can act like an asshole and no one can fire you.”

Too true. Too true.

Brett Favre Update: Rehab

I’ve learned from several unreliable sources that Brett Favre’s return to the NFL has taken a detour into an unnamed rehabilitation facility. Apparently, at the urging of his friends, associates and the general public at large, Brett has checked himself in for treatment of addiction to retirement announcements and retirement-related press conferences.

Some time late yesterday, Favre walked into a hotel room and was greeted with an ‘intervention’ that was mediated by Michael Vick, of all people. According to Vick, “Brett’s got to man up and admit that he’s lost grip on reality. A few bitch slaps to the head got him thinking things through a little clearer. Plus we had the sound effect of a rabid, angry dog playing from behind a closed closet door. That seemed to make him more agreeable.”

These same sources indicate that Favre will begin an intensive course of treatment that is said to include yoga, organic chewing ‘tobacco’ made from cured wildflowers and being forced to play Madden on an Xbox as any player but himself. It is unknown how long this course of treatment may take. Calls to Favre, Favre’s associates and anyone else on the matter were never made and thus, were never returned.

Kumbaya: The Corporate Edition

There’s been a lot of stress and strife in my office of late. Unfortunately it’s not job related, it’s personality related. A small group of people do not get along and it’s reached a point where it resulted in a large mistake that they’re all trying to blame on someone else.

This has led to all of us being told that we need to learn how to work together better. As a result, everyone is now in super overcompensation mode. Everyone’s happy. Everyone loves working with one another. Everyone loves…just about everything about everyone.

It gives me the creeps. Someone brought up a sign they had seen a while back that perfectly encapsulates the ridiculousness of the situation: The beatings will stop when morale improves.

Just a perfect weekend

with one comment

from the NY Times

from the NY Times

Had just about as good of a weekend as I can have.

Preseason football started. Which isn’t all that great but it does mean we’re one step closer to actual football. Had some good meals and tried some chorizo tacos at a Mexican place in our neighborhood. I’ve been putting diced potatoes into our tacos when we make them at home and it was good to see a restaurant doing the same. Made me feel like I know what I’m doing, at least with tacos anyway.

I read a really good book. Started in earnest on Friday and powered through it during the weekend. If you like Chuck Palahniuk or wanted to check him out, I really enjoyed Lullaby. This was especially gratifying because I started reading Shelby Foote’s 6000-ish page (literally), three volume Civil War anthology and got about 450 pages into the first volume and then just petered out. Reading the other book was just what I needed to dive back into the Civil War.

But perhaps best of all, the Yankees swept the Red Sox in a four-game homestand. I can’t tell you how much I hate the Red Sox. I hated them as a kid. I hate them as an adult. My parents who emigrated from another country hate them as well. Even my dog hates them. They’re that unlovable.

If only all my weekends could go like this…

The NFL Preseason is here

leave a comment »

Tonight kicks off the 2009 NFL Preseason with the annual Hall of Fame Game. I’m so, so desperate for pro football that I’m going to watch some of it for sure. Hope everyone else out there enjoys the quarter and a half of football that’s worth watching. The good news? We only get closer to the real thing from here.
