White-collar warfare…

For the most part, I like what I do and where I work.

Unfortunately, things started changing for the worse a couple of years ago. We got a new co-worker who doesn’t believe she’s a co-worker, she thinks she’s the boss. She believes this, despite the fact that I have been assured by the powers-that-be that she does not outrank me or anyone else for that matter. Regardless (or as she would say, “irregardless”), she has reprimanded me several times for imaginary transgressions and often identifies herself as ‘the highest ranking person in the office’ when the partners are off site. This is also a person who when showing our work to a client, described it as ‘urethral’ instead of ‘ethereal.’

Well things came to a head last week. She had a sit down with two of the partners and singled out me and some other folks in my department for bad attitudes and other forms of non-professional behavior. The war is on. She has drawn first blood. Unfortunately, I don’t think this is going to turn out in a way that anybody is happy with.

No matter what happens, this is when I most enjoy having a safe haven of hermit bliss to go home to. When I walk through my front door, I’m greeted by my loving wife and my overenthusiastic dog. The politics of cubicle life seem to just fade away.

Last night we all sat on our front porch and enjoyed the evening while I sipped a cold beer to the sound of rustling leaves. It was a great reminder of what really matters in life and that, no matter what, at home I’m safe from my troubles.
